The Hoan Kiem Lake is located in the center of the city and it is a popular hangout place for locals and tourists. Imperial Citadel of Thang Long is an intriguing relic of Vietnam’s history and, signifying its historical and cultural importance that was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Many artefacts and items dating back to between the 6th and 20th centuries were excavated in 2004, including foundations of old palaces, ancient roads, ponds and wells. On top of these discoveries, archaeologists also found bronze coins, ceramics and pottery from China and many places in Asia, all of which wwwnstrate a close trading relationship in the area. 
 

One Pillar Pagoda was constructed from wood based on a single stone pillar crafted into the shape of a lotus blossom and has been rebuilt several times, most recently in 1955 when the base was destroyed during the French evacuation. The pagoda is often used as a symbol for Hanoi and remains one of the city’s most revered sights in a beautifully tranquil garden setting with benches provided for comfortable contemplation. Lying next to the pagoda, Ho Chi Minh Museum is an elaborate description of Ho Chi Minh’s life, with 8 chronological topics modelling his personal life, the ten years where Ho Chi Minh travelled the world to find out a way to rescue the country from colonialism, the influence of Marxism and Leninism ideal into founding Vietnamese Communist party and striving for national independence and how the national hero was primarily discussed in his political life up until his pass away.

Hoa Lo Prison was French built for housing Vietnamese political campaigners for independence and was completed in 1913. These campaigners were captured and usually shackled to the floor where they could easily be beaten by guards. Vietnamese prisoners were also executed here by use of a guillotine which today is displayed near the prisons infamous death row. Hoa Lo Prison today portrays a different side of the horror stories told by former inmates despite the prominently displayed shackles hanging on the walls. Much of the emphasis is on the Vietnamese revolutionaries some of whom were executed at the prison.

Originally built as a university in 1070 dedicated to Confucius, the building is extremely well preserved and is a superb example of traditional-style Vietnamese architecture. Visiting the Temple of Literature you will discover historic buildings from the Ly and Tran dynasties in a revered place that has seen thousands of doctors’ graduate in what has now become a memorial to education and literature. Originally the university only accepted aristocrats, the elite and royal family members as students before eventually opening its doors to brighter ‘commoners’. Successful graduates had their names engraved on a stone stele which can be found on top of the stone turtles.

It’s also worth trying the quay sticks, which compared to elsewhere are really fresh.
